The advantage of this method is that the torque transmitted by the shaft can be reduced, which is conducive to reducing the size and mass of the shaft. When the cylindrical gear pair is used to reduce the edge of the wheel, it can change the upper and lower position relationship between the wheel axis and the axle by adjusting the mutual position of the two gears. This kind of axle is called portal axle, which is often used for cars with special requirements on the high and low position of axle.

At present, the domestic automobile basically adopts the single speed main reducer with fixed transmission ratio. In the two-speed main reducer, there are two transmission ratios for choice, and this main reducer actually plays the role of auxiliary transmission.
